Dear sirs,
I am a university student in Geology and I am interested in the use of cwp-su package.
I would like to use it on my Windows 10 64 bit PC: does cwp-su be used on that kind of platform ?
In the case which is/are the requirements ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
Giulia
Hi Giulia, As you can read, seismic unix is easy to install and run on... unix-like systems (mainly linux and mac os).
Some people have used it natively on windows using Cygwin (https://www.cygwin.com/). Cygwin will bring a bunch of software to windows in order to mimic a unix system. I hope someone on the list can help you with this.
An other way to run SU on a MS-Windows PC is to use virtualization, running WSL2 on windows (or virtualbox, vmware slower than WSL2 but maybe more portable). In that case you will run a linux over windows system, with potential sharing of your disk and peripherals between the windows host and the linux guest. WSL2 is a genuine microsoft software while virtualbox is free/libre software. It seems that WSL2 has been improved on recent windows releases (the X-server is now included. To be verified). I'm sure that numerous users on this list use wsl2.
I hope it helps !

WSL2 is straightforward, apart from the X Windows side of things. Its main problem, which is not huge, is in setting the ip address of the display. There is plenty of online experience to draw on for this.
Another option is to set up a Docker image. There seems to be one at https://hub.docker.com/r/mstormo/seismic_unix, which may work.

I compiled a short blog on WSL recently for seismic unix. In my view it's the best Windows option in 2022. Yes, setting the ip address of the display could be a nightmare.
A shortcut could be:
1) install MobaXterm, as a Xserver and terminal for Windows X11 (https://mobaxterm.mobatek.net/)
2) install Windows Linux Subsystem (WSL2) with ubuntu, and Seismic Unix following https://tonnta-energy.com/wp/seismic-unix-on-windows/
More help to install seismic unix: https://wiki.seismic-unix.org/sudoc:su_installation. Please use the standard Makeconfig of ubuntu, it works!, and beware of a mistake when exporting the DISPLAY: use export CWPROOT=/usr/local/cwp, instead of export *$*CWPROOT=/usr/local/cwp
3) in MobaXterm go to "Settings" -> "Configuration" -> "X11"->X11 remote acces "full"
After that:
A) you will have ubuntu with seismic unix that can be run in MobaXterm double-clicking in the User sessions as in Fig. attached (Captura-MobaXterm.png)
B) After double clicking and waiting for several seconds, your seismic unix in ubuntu is working, you can type
suplane | suximage perc=98 to test it (Captura-SeismicUnix.png)

Dear Giulia,
From what I have been seeing as good responses to your questions, you may not want what I am sending you. But, some time ago I went through the exercise of installing Seismic Unix ( R19) under cygwin and took some notes, which I attach. Do not feel obliged to use them.. Please feel free to ask questions and thanks for trying out Seismic Unix software.
Cheers, Juan
